Viva Las VegaStamps! DT Tryout

With this post, I'm applying to the Design Team at Viva Las VegaStamps! I like their funky and versatile stamps a lot so I'd really love to be a part of that team.

Here are three of my recent favourite stamped projects. The call is on until May 30th, in case someone else is interested!

Last Days of Disco Hand

At my favourite site ATCs for All, we’re also trading Hand Art, where you make your art on hand shaped pieces of cardboard. This one is for a trading friend who requested a Pink and Sparkly Hand.

The neon pink of my acrylic paint reminded me of the 1980’s fashion, and the combination of black lace and bright pink in particular. You know what I mean, if you remember Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan!

I wanted there to be a ring chained to a bracelet and knew I had exactly the stamp for that: Record Face On 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 I just got in the mail from VLVS! I stamped and heat embossed the row of vinyls on top of the lace glove I had printed with a stamp from Stampendous. The bracelet and attached ring are cut from star shaped punchinella ribbon, and the other rings are circle shaped die cuts from sparkly papers.

Mixed Media Medusa ATC

My favourite style in ATC cards is mixed media collage, and here’s a card I’m particularly happy with! She’s a Medusa, the Greek mythical character with a female face and snakes in place of her hair. Medusa’s look could turn the lookers to stone, and she can also be seen as a symbol of mistreated women’s anger. In the designer Versace’s logo, on the other hand, she is said to represent beauty, art and philosophy. A many faced figure, then!

The face stamp I used is from Lost Coast Designs. I stamped her on a piece of a map to add a bit of an edge to it. She comes from the dark underwater, after all! The background is painted with acrylics on a music sheet. For the snake skin pattern of the hair, I used punchinella as a stencil to spread Golden Modeling Paste from the German supplies brand Lukas.

Lady with a Snow Globe: Mixed Media Wall Art

This wall hanging is actually an altered book cover. I knew I wanted the focal image to be my new Lady with a Snow Globe from VLVS! But first of all, I wanted to make lots of layers.

This will be a present to a friend across the ocean, with whom we first became pen pals as young girls. With the postal theme in mind, I picked some used postage stamps and borders from airmail envelopes.

I also pasted a lace border at the bottom of the piece and small sun or star punch-outs here and there. The doodled flowers are patterned tissue paper decoupaged onto the background. Apart from them, the collage background does not show through much in the end, but I like how it gives depth to the piece anyway!

I gave the piece some gesso and several layers of acrylic paint and stamped a bit here and there before stamping and heat embossing the Lady.

Though she's actually looking at a snow globe, I think her face is so kind and knowing that she might also be a good fairy or fortune-teller visioning happy years for my friend on her birthday!

Lyhyesti suomeksi

Tällä kertaa tuli aika pitkä postaus ja pelkästään englanniksi. Uskaltauduin hakemaan Viva Las VegaStamps! Seuraavalla kertaa kirjoittelen taas suomeksikin!

The Color Room #151: Icicle Time

Right now, I’m so into colour challenges that when the new palette appeared at The Color Room, I wanted to make a new layout right away. Another challenge I gave myself was to finish the layout in one evening, and that I almost managed to do. The journaling and titles I finished the following day.

Here’s how I started to pick papers I might want to use. Not all of them were included in the end!

Aloitin levittämällä pöytään reilusti papereita, joiden värit voisivat mahdollisesti sopia. Kaikkia en käyttänyt, ja jotain muuta tuli tilalle.

The lovely Finnish-language weekday stamp by the Sodalicious girls was especially made for the kit at their Helsinki, Finland workshop this April, and its' quickly becoming one of my favourites. I wish you all a nice week and summer sunshine, despite of my wintery layout!

Suomenkielinen viikonpäiväleima on Sodaliciousin Annan ja Jaszmurkan varta vasten teettämä workshoppiin, jonka he pitivät viime kuun Intohimoa Skräppäyksestä -tapahtumassa.

For your information, I had to edit the title, having written the challenge number wrong at first. In the address of the post it's still #150, though it's supposed to be #151.

Sunny Afternoon Games for The Color Room #150 & S4H May Challenges

Hello all! Here's a layout with a photo of a sunny spring afternoon when my son and I were visiting my parents. They are recently retired and have lots of outdoorsy and other hobbies. My son and I got to enjoy their super active lifestyle a bit, when they took us to try both bowling and golf on the same day! And when we got home there was still this old Fortuna game to try. My son did pretty well and at age five, he's quite into all kinds of games and sports right now. He does not yet take losing very well, though!

Here's the colour scheme of the Color Room #150 Challenge.

Color Room -haasteen värimaailma oli tällainen:

In Scrap for Help, there's always a recycled product you must use each month, and this May it was napkins. I used them in two ways. First I gessoed one onto the background, which toned the patterned paper closer to the aqua of the colour challenge. The middle layers of 3-ply napkins are good, if you just want a light colour and pattern.

I also covered three chipboard circles with napkins (by Marimekko) to make colour coordinated embellishments.

Puupahvipyörylöiden päällystämiseen käytin päällimmäistä ja keskikerrosta samasta Marimekon servietistä, ja vaaleansininen on silkkipaperia. Maalasin ensin kuviot valkoisella ja kiinnitykseen käytin decoupage-lakkaa.

And changed the colour of the flower a bit to match to blue in the photo. The inner flower is hand crocheted. It was fun to join a colour challenge, and I hope to do it soon again!

Väritin kukkaa akryylimaaleilla hieman lähemmäs valokuvassa olevaa sinistä. Keskellä oleva kukka on käsin virkattu. Olipa hauskaa vaihtelua osallistua värihaasteeseen, ja odottelenkin jo uusia värejä!

More ATCs with Punchinella

Here's more cards using punchinella as a stencil, made in the style of my earlier post Quirky Torn Paper Faces. Have a nice crafty Sunday!

Lisää punchinellaprinttiä ja hullunkurisia kasvoja

Tässä taas pari ATC-korttia, joissa on käytetty punchinellaa painosabluunana. Lisää hassuja kasvoja löytyy aiemmasta postauksestani. Aurinkoista sunnuntaita kaikille, tai tunnelmallista sadepäivää askartelun parissa!

Mixed Media ATCs with Punchinella

Here are some ATCs I made using punchinella as a stencil. Punchinella is also called sequin waste, so it's also a recycled product, at least originally. I'm not sure if all punchinella is actually leftovers from making sequins.

Anyway, I enjoy using it to print small patterns. Very suitable to ATC size. A fun idea to try is also that after stencilling, don't clean the punchinella right away. Turn it upside down onto the paper to make a reverse print first! Look if you can see that on the Apple ATCs.

Punchinella sabluunana

Joko tiedät, mitä on punchinella?

Omenakorteissa on tehty näin.

Garden Time: An Art Journal Spread

Hello again! If you enjoy gardening like I do, you know how exciting and busy time spring can be. Garden was also the theme of the month at Faber-Castell's Design Memory Craft Challenge. With this art journal spread, I'm participating in another challenge as well. It's called Paper Lovers Studio and I just came across it the other day.

The prompt was to combine cut paper, paint and drawing. I started with acrylics, stencilling the paint with punchinella.

The tulips are made from old scraps where I had stamped these ladybirds or bugs. I'm always happy if I can think of using a stamp for something else than the subject that it actually depicts!

The watering can and the outlines for the flowers were drawn with Promarkers. For the clouds, I used Faber-Castell's Big Brush Markers with a lot of water and really like how it turned out. The paper has to be quite wet when you draw on it, if you want this fading effect to happen. I think the clouds are my favourite part of this spread!

Puutarhan aika

ATCs from Paint Chips

Once again, I owe a fun and creative idea to my trading pals at ATCs for All! Theses cards are for a swap where you were supposed to use paint chips as the background for ATC cards. The theme of each card is inspired by the name of the paint. This was so much fun, I'll have to go back to the hardware store to get some more!

ATC-kortit maalien värimalleista

Olipa taas kiva ATC-vaihdon aihe ATCs for All -yhteisössä − tätä en olisi keksinyt itse: Taustana tuli käyttää maalien sävymallikortteja, ja kortin aiheen piti liittyä maalin nimeen. Kokeilin vähän eri tekniikoita kussakin. Ei kun rautakauppaan lisää värimalleja hakemaan!

Rooibos: Woman's face stamped on a piece of map, elements from a teabag, sticky ornament ribbon from Panduro, Stockholm.

Naisen kasvot leimattu kartalle, kuva ja mietelause teepussista, tarrapintainen koristenauha Tukholman Pandurosta.

Barbie: Image from a toy catalogue, bag hand drawn on magazine clip, tulle ribbon and found poetry.

Lelukuvastosta leikattu Barbie, laukku piirretty itse, tyllinauharusetti ja kirjasta leikattuja pätkiä.

Bonsai: Tree stamped with Stazon ink (the safest bet when stamping on a glossy background), die cut tree embossed with Ranger Embossing Antiquities powder in colour Verdigris, used postage stamp, and washi tape.

Stazon-musteella leimattu puu (Stazon on turvallisin valinta, kun leimataan kiiltävälle pinnalle), kuvioleikattu ja kohojauheella koristeltu puu, käytetty postimerkki, washi-teippi Teippitarhasta.

Henna: hand drawn with Promarkers.

Käsin piirretty Promarker-kynillä.
